A mouthwash can be used to improve your daily oral hygiene. There are many types available. They should not be used as a substitute for toothbrushing.

Should I use a mouthwash?

Mouthwashes are mainly used to freshen breath. If you have to keep using a breath freshener to mask bad breath, you probably should see your dentist.

A Fluoride mouthwash can help prevent tooth decay. A mouthwash should be used once daily.

How long should I keep it in the mouth?

Follow the manufacturers recommendations. But usually it is for 1 minute.

Can I swallow the mouthwash?

Absolutely not. Parents should observe children when using mouthwash to ensure they don’t swallow it.

Which mouthwash should I use?

A fluoride containing mouthwash is good for teeth. Certain mouthwashes can be prescribes. For example, Corsodyl mouthwash which can be used as a plaque control method for a short time only.

Used for ulcers, gum disease, after surgery etc. It is recommended that corsodyl is only used for 2 weeks as it can cause tooth staining, altered taste perception etc.
