Inlays

What is an Inlay?

An inlay is a custom made restoration made in the laboratory to be placed inside a tooth. It is essentially a lab-made filling and is available in different materials. Inlays feel very comfortable when chewing.

Why do I need an Inlay?

Sometimes it is necessary to make an inlay to give added protection to a weak tooth or an existing filling. The biting cusps of a tooth may need this extra protection. Without an inlay, a failed filling or a weak cusp may fracture to an extent which is not easily repairable.

What are the advantages of an Inlay?

Because inlays are made in the lab under microscope and using digital technology, we can accurately design their shape and size exactly to fit. This means that they usually last for much longer without the need for early replacement. They are also more protective of the tooth compared to simple fillings. Some inlay materials can exhibit a very natural look to the tooth and often patients can’t notice where inlays have been placed. The materials are usually stronger as well.

What materials are inlays available in?

The common materials are:

Gold

Porcelain

Composite

How are they placed?

It is made in 2 appointments:

1st Visit: Once the tooth has been prepared, impressions are taken and sent to the laboratory. The tooth is temporised.

2nd Visit: The temporary is taken off and the inlay is fitted.
