Extractions

What is an extraction?

This is the removal of a tooth.

Why are teeth removed?

Many reasons. For example, tooth decay, loose teeth, injury etc. Sometimes healthy teeth are removed before patients have braces to create spaces in the mouth.

What does it involve?

A local anaesthetic is used to num the tooth up. The tooth is then ‘wiggled’ and taken out.

Will it hurt?

No. Patients feel a little bit of pressure but no pain.

What happens after?

It may take a few days for the socket to heal. It is important to follow the dentist’s advice.

What about the gap?

There are options to have the gap replaced by means of a denture, bridge or an implant. Sometimes, it may be possible to make a denture or bridge before the tooth is taken out so that you are not left with a gap.

Please read the patient education section for further information.

What is a surgical Extraction?

When teeth are badly decayed and broken down, it will be very difficult to take the tooth out and may become necessary to undertake a surgical extraction.
